The Waitlist Process
If you have been waitlisted, UCLA uses this as a genuine enrollment management tool.
Opt-in Requirement: You must explicitly opt-in to the waitlist via the
website. For freshman, this deadline was April 15.My Application Status Waitlist Updates: Unlike many other UC campuses, UCLA provides space on the Waitlist Option form for you to provide updates and additional information.
This is your chance to highlight new achievements or academic progress since you submitted your application in November. Decision Timeline: Waitlist movement typically begins after May 1, once the university knows how many admitted students have committed.
Notifications continue throughout the summer.
What UCLA Looks For
UCLA uses a "Holistic Review" process, meaning they don't just look at GPA.
Academic Rigor: Performance in the most challenging courses available to you (AP, IB, Honors).
Personal Insight Questions (PIQs): Your ability to express your unique voice and experiences across four 350-word responses.
Contributions to Campus: They look for students who will contribute to the "intellectual and cultural vitality" of the school through leadership, community service, or creative endeavors.
Note: UCLA does not consider SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarship purposes, and they do not accept letters of recommendation.
Financial Aid
Financial status is not considered during the admission review. If you are admitted (including off the waitlist), you will be eligible for financial aid as long as you submitted your FAFSA or California Dream Act application by the deadline.
