USC Undergraduate Admission Appeal, Appeal Package, Submit Appeal and Timelines

Appealing an undergraduate admission decision at USC is a formal process, but it is important to know upfront that admissions decisions are rarely reversed. USC specifies that an appeal will only be considered if there is significant new and compelling information that was not available or present in your initial application.

If you have new academic achievements, updated transcripts, or significant life events that impact your application profile, here is how you can submit an appeal:

1. Understand the Criteria for an USC undergraduate admission appeal

USC will not reverse a decision based on information they have already reviewed. To have a valid basis for an appeal, you must present:

  • New Academic Information: Significantly higher senior year grades, new standardized test scores (if applicable), or major academic accolades received after your application was submitted.

  • Compelling New Circumstances: Severe personal or family hardships, medical situations, or other unforeseen challenges during high school that drastically impacted your past performance but have since changed, which you didn't previously document.

2. Prepare Your Appeal Package

Your appeal must be thorough and concise. It typically consists of:

  • The Appeal Letter: A written statement (usually limited to one page) explaining exactly what has changed or what new information you are bringing to the table. Keep the tone professional, positive, and focused on your fit for USC, rather than expressing frustration about the initial decision.

  • Supporting Documentation: Official up-to-date transcripts, new letters of recommendation (only if they offer a completely new perspective on your achievements), or official documentation of your new accomplishments.

3. How to Submit the Appeal

Do not mail physical letters or email random admissions officers. USC requires appeals to be submitted through your official portal:

  1. Log into your USC Applicant Portal.

  2. Look for the formal Admission Decision Appeal Form (this is typically made available in the portal shortly after decisions are released).

  3. Upload your letter and any supporting documents directly through the form.

4. Important Timelines and Deadlines

  • Deadlines: USC strictly enforces a deadline for appeals, which is usually mid-to-late April for Fall freshmen admits. For Spring admits looking to appeal for a Fall spot, or for transfer students, check your portal for the exact date, as deadlines vary by your applicant type.

  • The Waiting Period: USC reviews all appeals collectively after the main enrollment deadlines. You can generally expect a final decision on your appeal by mid-May to early June.

A Quick Reality Check: Because space in incoming classes is exceptionally tight, you should not delay making alternate plans. Secure your spot at another institution by paying their enrollment deposit by the national May 1 deadline to ensure you have a path forward while waiting for USC's appeal decision.
